Box Score 2 WINCHESTER, Va. – Freshman Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) tossed a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Randolph-Macon softball team split an ODAC doubleheader at Shenandoah on Friday evening.
The Yellow Jackets (16-6, 1-1 ODAC) posted an 8-0 victory in five innings in Game 2 after the Hornets (9-10, 2-2 ODAC) outscored R-MC 10-8 in the opener.
Whittemore walked four and struck out nine to raise her record to 9-2. She allowed a single with one away in the first and did not surrender another hit.
R-MC got a run in the top of the first as freshman Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./Liberty) had a leadoff double, was sacrificed to third by sophomore Brandi Mulvena (Farnham, Va./Rappahannock) and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets erupted for six in the third. Gilman had an RBI single, senior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had a sacrifice fly, sophomore Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) delivered a sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by freshman Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va./Prince George), McDaniel and Mulvena gave R-MC a 7-0 lead.
Sophomore Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./Brunswick) homered in the fourth to make the final 8-0.
Gilman drove in two, while McDaniel and Mulvena both had two hits, one run and one RBI.
In the opener, the Hornets broke open a 1-1 game with seven runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) went 3 for 4 with a homer and two runs, while Abernethy had three hits, one run and one RBI for the Yellow Jackets. Ford and Jones both drove in two.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, March 29, with a 3 p.m. home ODAC doubleheader against Bridgewater.
