FOREST, Va. – Randolph-Macon junior pitcher James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and freshman utility player Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) were named All-ODAC First Team, while Spiers was voted ODAC Rookie of the Year as the 2015 All-ODAC Baseball Awards were announced.
A total of seven Yellow Jackets were honored. Senior reliever JT Williamson (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), junior catcher Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and sophomore third baseman Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) were selected All-ODAC Second Team, while senior shortstop Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John’s Prep) and junior designated hitter Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) earned All-ODAC Third Team honors.
Walsh led the conference with 10 starts, 59.0 innings pitched and 70 strikeouts. He posted a 5-1 record with a 2.29 ERA. Walsh allowed 49 hits and walked 17. Opponents hit just .221 against Walsh. In eight ODAC starts, Walsh was 4-1 with 59 strikeouts in 50 innings.
Spiers was a starting pitcher and outfielder for the Yellow Jackets. He led the ODAC with six victories, was third with 46 strikeouts, fourth with 56.0 innings pitched and fifth with a 1.77 ERA. Spiers batted .333 at the plate and had an on-base percentage of .408. He hit .367 in conference contests.
Williamson led the ODAC with five saves and all five came in conference games. He went 3-1 with an ERA of 2.31. Williamson made 11 appearances, with 10 out of the bullpen. He walked eight and struck out 29 in 23.1 innings.
Keeler batted .357 in 21 starts with four doubles, one homer, 23 runs and 15 RBI. He drew 10 walks and fanned just six times. Keeler had an on-base percentage of .436. Keeler posted a fielding percentage of .992, committing just one error in 124 chances.
Brown hit .352 in 24 starts with seven doubles, 25 runs and 20 RBI. Brown had 13 walks and posted an on-base percentage of .437. Brown batted .385 in 17 conference starts with 18 RBI and 21 runs.
Meiners started all 29 games at shortstop. He batted .328 with six doubles, one home run and 15 RBI. Meiners was sixth in runs with 29 and third in stolen bases, going 12 for 12. Meiners had more walks than strikeouts and had an on-base percentage of .432.
Maiolo batted .410 in 22 games with 20 starts. He was third in the ODAC with a batting average of .410. Maiolo was second in the conference with a slugging percentage of .699 and fourth with 27 RBI. He had eight doubles, two triples, four homers and 20 runs. Maiolo struck out just four times, had an on-base percentage of .457 and was 4 of 5 in stolen bases.
R-MC enters the ODAC Tournament with a record of 22-7 overall and 13-7 in conference play. The 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets, under head coach Ray Hedrick, are the No. 3 seed in the ODAC Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Bridgewater in an opening-round game on Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at City Stadium in Lynchburg, Va.
