Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Junior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) struck out 12 in eight innings in the opener as the 12th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team split a doubleheader with Lynchburg in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
The Yellow Jackets (19-7, 10-7) won 13-1 in Game 1 before the Hornets (12-18, 7-8) took the nightcap 13-2.
Walsh (4-1) allowed three hits, one run, one walk and 12 strikeouts. He retired 14 straight from the third through seventh innings and did not allow a hit after the third inning.
R-MC scored in seven of its eight at-bats, including multiple runs in each of the first four frames. Junior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) went 5 for 5 with two runs and two RBI. Senior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) and junior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) both had three hits, two runs and three RBI. Maiolo's three knocks were all extra-base hits: a two-run homer in the first to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good, a double in the fourth and an RBI triple in the fifth. Maiolo hit a fielder's choice in his final at-bat of the game in an attempt to hit for the cycle.
Sophomore Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) had two hits, two runs and two RBI for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets could only scratch out two runs in Game 2. Trentham had two hits, giving him seven for the afternoon. Junior Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) also had two hits. Maiolo had a base hit in his first at-bat, hitting for the cycle in the doubleheader.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, April 14 for a 3:30 p.m. ODAC contest at Virginia Wesleyan.
