Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – In front of a packed Hugh Stephens Field,
the Randolph-Macon baseball team finished their ODAC regular season
with a two game sweep over Guilford College (8-7, 3-2).
In game one the Yellow Jackets (21-13, 14-6 ODAC) took off with
four runs in the first, but the Quakers 19-20, 9-11 ODAC) responded
with a four run rally of their own to establish the 5-4 edge in the
second. Down 6-4 in the fourth, R-MC strung together three runs on
three hits from Stuart Brown
(Midlothian, VA / Trinity) (1-for-7, 1 run, 1 RBI), Christian
Sanderson (1-for-6, 1 run), and Jordan Schmeer
(4-for-9, 2 runs, 4 RBI) to regain the 7-6 lead.
GC posted one run in the fifth to knot the game 7-7 before the
Jackets notched a run on a Sid Harvey (Ashburn,
VA / Stone Bridge) (2-for-3, 1 RBI) single that brought home Nick
Maiolo (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) (2-for-7, 2 runs, 2 RBI) for the
8-7 lead.
R-MC would hold to win as Nic Phelps
(Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) (1-1) took home the victory. Glen
McLaughlin (Richmond, VA / Douglas Freeman) was credited with the
save (6).
Game two saw four scoreless innings before the Quakers scored
one run in fifth. With runners on first and second, Schmeer doubled
down the right field line to score Blake Saathoff
(Catonsville, MD / Archbishop Spalding) (1 run, 1 RBI) and tie the
contest one-all. R-MC tallied two additional runs for the 3-1 edge,
and would go on to trump GC 3-2, securing the two game sweep.
Senior lefthander Jamie Hendrick
(Chesterfield, VA / J.R. Tucker) (6-1) was credited with the win
going 7.1 innings and posting six strikeouts and zero walks. With
that victory, Hendrick is tied with former All-American Travis
Beazley for fourth all-time in total wins. McLaughlin took home his
second save of the day and seventh of the season.
The Randolph-Macon baseball team returns to action this Monday
April 21, as they host Marymount for their final regular season
contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm at Hugh Stephens Field
at Estes Park.
