Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Taylor Balmaz (King George, Va./King George) capped a four-run fifth with a two-run double to put Randolph-Macon ahead for good in the nightcap in an ODAC softball doubleheader against Roanoke at the R-MC Softball Field.
The Yellow Jackets (7-5, 1-3) took the nightcap 8-4 after the Maroons (5-10, 1-2) won 5-1 in the opener.
R-MC trailed 4-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth in Game 2. Sophomore Sam Moore (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) led off with a home run to narrow the margin to two. With one away, sophomore Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) singled up the middle. Freshman pinch-runner Ashley Stauffer (Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeastern) moved to second on a base hit by junior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews). Both moved up on a wild pitch and Stauffer scored on a second wild pitch to make it a one-run contest. Junior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) drew a walk to put the go-ahead run on base. With two away, Balmaz ripped a double down the left field line to drive in both base-runners and give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 lead.
Randolph-Macon added three insurance runs in the sixth, keyed by RBI singles off the bats of Jarvis and Sopko.
Woody finished with three hits, while Jarvis had two hits and two runs.
Sophomore Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) went the distance on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, allowing 10 hits and four runs (two earned) with three walks and one strikeout.
Sophomore Christine Simon (Richmond, Va./James River) went 3 for 4 with one RBI in Game 1 for the Yellow Jackets. Roanoke scored two in the second and three in the sixth, while R-MC tallied its lone run in the seventh.
R-MC will travel to Mary Baldwin on Thursday, March 20 for a 2 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
