Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Randolph-Macon baseball team opened their 2014 campaign with a 4-3 loss to Huntingdon College this afternoon in the Firehouse Classic.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the third inning, capitalizing on two Huntingdon errors. With one out, freshman infielder Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, VA / Benedictine) doubled down the right-field line, scoring Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, VA / Jefferson Forest) who previously advanced to second on the first Hawks error. Shmeer then advanced to third on a wild pitch before extending the R-MC lead to 2-0 on a Michael Trentham (Midlothian, VA / James River) RBI. After stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error, Trentham scored the Jackets' third run of the game on a Bryan Miltenberger (Midlothian, VA / Cosby) single.
R-MC starting pitcher Daniel Byrd (Chesterfield, VA / Cosby) kept the Hawks to three scoreless innings before a three-run HC rally in the fourth would tie the contest 3-3. Freshman lefthander Austin Goyne (Goochland, VA / Goochland) came in for Byrd in the fifth, giving up two hits and one run to give the Hawks the 4-3 edge.
The Yellow Jackets would record a total of three hits for the remainder of the game, leaving three men on base. Goyne picked up the loss this afternoon for R-MC while Schmeer and Trentham were both 1-3 with one run and one RBI. Miltenberger was 1-4 with one RBI.
