Anderson Pulls Down 20 Boards as R-MC Edges Stevenson

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) had her second straight double-double with 14 points and 20 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Stevenson 73-68 Saturday afternoon in the 2014 R-MC Tip-Off Classic sponsored by Riesbeck Contracting.

Anderson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Classic.

The Yellow Jackets (4-0) held a 38-31 lead at halftime before starting the second period on an 8-2 run to take their largest lead at 46-33 with 16:45 remaining. The Mustangs (2-1) used a 15-2 spurt to knot the score at 48-48 with 13 minutes remaining. R-MC then scored 11 straight to lead 59-48 just past the midway point of the period. Stevenson worked the deficit down to two at 67-65 with 3:30 remaining. Senior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) scored on a fast break layup with just under three minutes left to push the lead to four at 69-65. The Mustangs fought back and closed to within one with 37 seconds left. Junior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 71-68 advantage. Following a Stevenson turnover, Parsons sank two more free throws to make the final 73-68.

R-MC built a 20-13 lead in the first nine minutes before an 11-4 run by Stevenson tied the game at 24-24. The Yellow Jackets used a 14-3 spurt to lead 38-27 with 1:20 left in the half. The Mustangs scored the final four points of the period to trail 38-31 at the break. Anderson recorded a double-double in the first half with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Parsons finished with 23 points and was named to the All-Classic Team. Junior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) pitched in 11 for the Yellow Jackets. Freshman Amber Lee (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) came off the bench to put up eight points and eight rebounds.

Sara Tarbert (25 points, 17 rebounds, 5 steals) and Kayla Kelly (14 points, 3 assists) of Stevenson were also named to the All-Classic Team. Joining them were Cassidy Burkholder of Bridgewater and Ayanna Pegues of Methodist.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Hollins on Tuesday, Nov. 25 for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest to kick off conference play. R-MC returns home on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. for another ODAC match-up with Eastern Mennonite.
