Helbig Earns Fourth Career Tournament Win as R-MC Drops W&L 5-1.

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior right hander Michael Helbig tossed nine innings of one run baseball as Randolph-Macon picked up a 5-1 victory over Washington and Lee in the ODAC Tournament Friday night. The Yellow Jackets will now face top seeded Bridgewater Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 am in a matchup of the final two unbeaten teams in the double elimination tournament.

Helbig's dominant complete game performance on the mound improved his career ODAC Tournament record to 4-0. The senior allowed just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts on 132 pitches for his fifth win of the season.

R-MC's offense came to life in the early innings much as it did against H-SC in the opening game to support Helbig's start. ODAC Rookie of the Year Mitchell Keeler led off the first with a walk and then scored on Jeb Weymouth's double to center. Michael Trentham followed two batters later with a single to plate Weymouth and give the Yellow Jackets an early 2-0 lead.

Nate Meiners and Michael Kroll led off the top of the second with back to back singles for Randolph-Macon. Mark Heideman then executed a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, setting up Keeler for an RBI groundout. Fletcher followed with a run scoring single to right to push the edge to 4-0.

Weymouth scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to push the R-MC advantage to 5-0.

The Generals finally broke through with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Joe Scalzo tripled in a run. Helbig then retired the next batter to secure the 5-1 Yellow Jacket victory.

Trentham finished 4-for-5 at the dish and drove in a run to lead the Yellow Jackets offensively. Weymouth went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Travis Lodge and Meiners also chipped in with multi-hit performances.

Jonathan Stutts went 2-for-4 to pace the Generals at the dish. Eric Wisotsky is saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on ten hits in six innings of work.
