Box Score Ashland, VA – The Randolph-Macon College Softball team completed its home slate with a 3-1 victory over Southern Virginia in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 16th. R-MC finishes the season undefeated at home for the first time in program history (23-0) and improves to 30-6 on the year.
Both teams defense held strong in the first three innings, allowing no runs on either side. Laura Tome got the Knights on the board first in the fourth inning with a single to center field to score Malia Falvai, but was caught trying to steal second and was thrown out by Madison Gilman to end the inning.
The Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the fourth as Christa Simon walked and advanced to third on a throwing error. Gilman then hit a deep sacrifice fly out to left field to drive home Simon and tie the score a 1-1.
R-MC continued it scoring attack in the bottom of the fifth and added two more run to make the score 3-1. Heather Lewis led off with a double to left field and scored off a Lacey Berry single to center field. One batter later, Simon tripled to left field to drive home Berry.
Heather Lewis continued to stay strong on the mound and allowed no Southern Virginia hits in the last two innings to secure the win for the Yellow Jackets. Lewis picked up her 17 win on the mound and finished with a strikeout.
Gilman led the Yellow Jackets offense, going 1-for-1 with an RBI, sac fly and a double. Simon finished 1-for-2, including a RBI and the only triple of the game. Jessica Matthews paved the way on the base path with two stolen bases.
Randolph-Macon will be back on the field April 18th as they travel to Shenandoah University for a double-header set to start at 4:00 p.m.
