Box Score 2 Ashland, VA – Randolph-Macon College Softball swept Eastern Mennonite University 4-3 and 5-3 Sunday as the Yellow Jackets honored their five seniors. R-MC improves to a perfect 22-0 at home and have won their last eight games overall.
The Royals (16-16 / 5-11 ODAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one after Cheyenne Cash hit a RBI single to right field to score Casey Racer and Courtney Allman.
The Yellow Jackets (29-6 / 12-4 ODAC) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Amanda Sopko reached first on a throwing error and advanced to second on a Christa Simon ground out. Sopko then stole third base and was sent home when freshman catcher, Madison Gilman, singled to right field.
Randolph-Macon took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back homeruns from Gilman and Katie Woody.
EMU tied the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh as Aislinn Miller scored off a Brooke Sigrist double to center field.
In the bottom of the seventh, Michalann Camp singled to second base. Jessica Matthews came in the pinch run for Camp and proceeded to steal second base and advance to third off a wild pitch. After a pitch hit Lauryn Nanny, Sopko drilled a RBI single to center field to capture the win for the Yellow Jackets.
Gilman led the Yellow Jacket offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a homerun. Camp finished 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sopko and Matthews each had a stolen base in the win.
Heather Lewis picked up her 16th win on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, pitching all seven innings.
In game two, it was the Yellow Jackets who lit up the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the first inning. Sopko reached first off a single to the pitcher and advanced to second when Christa Simon was hit by a pitch. Sopko picked up her second stolen base of the day as she took third and Simon advanced to second. Sharese Jarvis then drove both of them home on a single to center field to give R-MC the 2-0 lead.
EMU pulled within one after Jordan Aylor hit a solo homerun in the top of the third inning.
R-MC continued its scoring, posting three runs in the bottom of the third. Jarvis scored the first run after Woody reached first on a throwing error and advanced to second and sent Gilman to third. Jenna Best singled to center field to drive home Gilman and score the second run of the inning. Camp then doubled to center field to score Woody and increase the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-1.
The Royals put up two runs in the top of the fourth, but that is as close as they would get as Best relieved Kristen Dize on the mound and allowed no runs and only three hits in the last two innings.
Simon, Jarvis and Camp led the offense, going 2-for-3. Jarvis also had two RBI while Camp had one. Simon and Sopko also had a stolen base. Dize picked up the win, her 11th of the season.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday, April 16th when the play host to Southern Virginia for a 3:00 p.m. game. This contest will not be a doubleheader.
