Yellow Jackets Sweep Generals for First ODAC Victories of 2013

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon swept the Generals of Washington and Lee on Sunday to improve to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC.

The Yellow Jackets used a strong pitching performance in game one by Michael Helbig to win 5-0. Helbig (2-2) tossed seven shutout innings, striking out nine in the win.

R-MC broke the scoring open in the fourth, scoring four runs off W&L starter Ian Shaw. Jon Witt, Travis Lodge, and Michael Trentham all drove in a run in the inning.

Jeb Weymouth finished the scoring in game one by driving in a run in the seventh, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Mitchell Keeler.

Keeler, Weymouth, and Witt all posted two hits for R-MC. Glenn McLaughlin pitched two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.

Alex Mait led the Generals with two hits. Shaw received the loss for W&L.

Nate Meiners capped a thrilling game two by driving in the game winning run in the 13th inning, giving R-MC a 3-2 come from behind win.

Washington and Lee took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, thanks to RBI doubles from Nick Biumi and Keegan Dolan.

The Yellow Jackets would respond in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. Weymouth and Tim Benjamin both walked, equaling the score at 2-2.

The two teams remained tied for the next six innings, setting up the 13th inning dramatics for R-MC.

Witt reached on a fielding error by the Generals to start the rally. Two batters later, Lodge singled to move pinch runner Nick Williamson to third.

Meiners then singled up the middle, scoring Williamson and adding another two-out RBI on the day for the Yellow Jackets.

Six Yellow Jacket pitchers helped limit the Generals to just two runs. Jake Bram started on the bump and allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Sid Harvey, Brandon Beiler, Austin Bain, Will Jennings, and JT Williamson all posted zeroes on the board for R-MC in relief. Williamson picked up his first win of the year.

Travis Lodge totaled five hits in game two, while Meiners added four hits and the game winning RBI.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, for a mid-week ODAC showdown with rival Hampden-Sydney. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 P.M.
