Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball dropped a 7-5 decision in the final game of a three game set with Rowan Monday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets are now 3-4 on the season and travel to Bridgewater College Saturday, March 2nd to open ODAC play at noon.
For the Yellow Jackets, Monday began with resuming game two of the series that was halted Sunday evening due to darkness. The two teams posted a scoreless ninth inning which allowed Rowan to hold on to a 13-11 victory.
The Profs broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third in game three when Mark Benak singled up the middle, scoring Eric Perez.
Randolph-Macon quickly answered with a four run rally in the bottom half. Austin Carpenter was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Michael Trentham and Travis Lodge drew walks to load the bases. Jeb Weymouth followed with another walk to bring in a run before Tim Benjamin ripped a single through the left side to score Trentham. A sacrifice fly to center from Matt Fischgrund and an RBI single by Mark Heideman pushed the R-MC advantage to 4-1.
Rowan tacked on one more run in the fourth to cut the lead to two but a Fischgrund groundball drove in a run in the fifth to put the Jackets back on top 5-2.
The Profs rallied past the Yellow Jackets in the top of the sixth, scoring five run on four hits and two walks to take a 7-5 edge.
Both teams were held scoreless in the final three frames and Rowan held on for the 7-5 win and a series sweep of Randolph-Macon.
The Yellow Jackets were paced at the plate by Weymouth and Benjamin. Weymouth went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two walks while Benjamin finished 4-for-5 with an RBI. Fischgrund drove in two runs and drew a walk.
Tanner Phillips picks up the loss in a third of an inning of relief. Phillips allowed two runs on three hits. Austin Bain, Glenn McLaughlin and Will Jennings combined for three hitless innings to finish out the contest.
Mark Benak led The Profs with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Benak had the games' only extra base hit when he doubled in the sixth and also drove in two runs.
Ryan Easterday earned in win for RU after allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out six in six and third innings of relief.
The Yellow Jackets begin ODAC play Saturday, March 2nd when they travel to Bridgewater College for a noon doubleheader.
