Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Mary Washington scored six consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter and topped Randolph-Macon 18-13 in men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
R-MC (1-1) got five goals and an assist from Jason Andrews, while Tim Rowe scored three goals in the loss. Goalkeeper Thomas Smith made 12 saves in net for R-MC, while Robert Fox grabbed a team-high eight groundballs.
UMW (1-1) jumped out to a 4-1 first quarter lead after a Chip Pittard strike with just over four minutes to go in the opening frame.
Andrews cut the Jackets deficit to one with his first goal with just nine seconds remaining.
UMW would maintain its lead, taking a 6-5 lead with three minutes left in the first half. R-MC answered with a Fox unassisted goal with 2:08 on the clock to tie the game at 6-6 going into the intermission.
Andrews would give R-MC its second lead of the game at the start of the third quarter off a pass from Josh Merwin.
For the remainder of the quarter, both teams went goal-for-goal and entered the final quarter tied at 12-12.
The Eagles started the fourth quarter scoring when Billy Kelly struck at the 14:24 mark. Mary Washington scored four more times, taking a 17-12 lead on a Justin Bohlinger goal with 4:52 to go in the game.
Justin Butler scored the final Yellow Jacket goal with 3:20 left to play, but it was not enough as the Eagles secured the 18-13 victory with a goal in the final minute of play.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Saturday, February 23rd when it hosts Lebanon Valley for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
