Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va--- Randolph-Macon held off a late rally by Emory & Henry to earn a 7-5 victory in the First Round of the ODAC Tournament at Lynchburg City Stadium. The Yellow Jackets will play Bridgewater in a winners bracket game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
R-MC (19-16-1) struck first off an RBI single by Austin Carpenter that scored Andrew Cheatham in the top of the second. The Wasps (15-22) responded, tying the game with a run in the third.
The Yellow Jackets put together their biggest inning in the fourth, plating four runs to go up 5-1. Macon Heikes highlighted the rally with a two run double down the right field line. Two batters later, Carpenter picked up an RBI and later scored on a Jake Fletcher sacrifice fly.
The Wasps scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, to cut the lead to 5-3.
Both teams cooled off until the eighth, when Brian Jordan picked up an RBI single to center field that scored Zach Broaddus.
Jordan Walton led off the ninth with a double down the right field line and later scored on an infield single by Broaddus.
In the ninth inning, E&H scored two runs and had the bases loaded with no outs before Ryan Wood closed the game, striking out Brandon Lucas for the first out. Wood was then able to get Josh McMillian to line out to Heikes who was able to step on third base before Logan Ball could get back to the bag for a game ending double play.
Fletcher and Broaddus both finished with two hits and an RBI. Cheatham scored two runs and Heikies picked up two RBI.
Michael Helbig earned the victory on the hill for the Jackets, allowing two runs and seven hits while striking out four in eight innings of work. Will Dingus took the loss for the Wasps, surrendering five runs (three earned) in four innings.
Bridgewater knocked off Guilford 2-1 earlier in the day. BC and R-MC split their regular season doubleheader back in March.
