Box Score 2 SALEM, Va--- Randolph-Macon College swept Roanoke College in a doubleheader Friday evening at Lewis Gale Field, home of Boston Red Sox Class A affiliate. The Yellow Jackets won their third straight contest, taking game one, 7-2 and game two 12-7.
After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, R-MC chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the second and fourth innings to even the score. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs to take the lead for good in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by Jeb Weymouth to make it 5-2.
Randolph-Macon (18-16-1/11-7 ODAC) added a score in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Brian Jordan and another RBI single by Weymouth in the top of the ninth to give the final score.
Weymouth paced the Jackets at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Tim Benjamin finished 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Michael Helbig added two hits in the victory.
Jamie Hendrick earned the win for R-MC, throwing a complete game allowing just seven hits and two runs while striking out three. Dalton Alitzer took the loss for the Maroons.
Roanoke (16-21/7-11 ODAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in bottom of the second in game two. R-MC responded in the next frame, manufacturing two runs off an RBI by Jake Fletcher and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Walton.
With the score tied at four in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets put the game away by scoring seven runs.
Andrew Cheatham started the scoring with an RBI double to score Weymouth. Macon Heikes, Zach Broaddus, and Austin Carpenter all recorded RBI singles to put R-MC up 8-4. Jordan plated Broaddus on a sacrifice fly and Walton singled up the middle to score Carpenter before Fletcher scored on an error to cap the scoring in the inning.
Carpenter finished 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Broaddus went 2-for-3 with three runs scored to pace the Jackets at the dish.
Michael Helbig picked up the victory for R-MC, striking out six while surrendering four runs in five innings of work. Tyler Grouten was saddled with the loss for the Maroons.
Randolph-Macon returns to action Thursday in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. Their opponent and the start time of the ball game will be announced at a later as several teams in the conference have not concluded play.
