R-MC Softball Sets New Single Season Wins Record with Sweep of Guilford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va--- Randolph-Macon College Softball swept Guilford Sunday afternoon at home.  The Yellow Jackets earned the victory in game one, 2-1 and topped the Quakers in game two, 10-4.

R-MC (25-9 / 11-3 ODAC) broke the mark of 24 wins in a year set by the 2008 squad.  The Yellow Jackets finished a busy week with a record of 7-1, and extended their win-streak to nine before falling to Lynchburg yesterday.

Randolph-Macon scored both runs the same way in game one.  Heather Lewis doubled to right center in the bottom of the first to become the first base runner of the game for the Jackets.  After moving to third on a Sharese Jarvis single, Lewis scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Laura Bauer to take the early 1-0 lead.

Lewis led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left center and later advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jarvis.  Bauer picked up her second RBI of the day, plating Lewis on another sacrifice fly to left field.

Guilford (16-20 / 3-11) cut the deficit to 2-1 off a Sloan King single, but Lewis shut the door in the seventh to tie the wins record.

Lewis led the Jackets on both sides of the field in the win, going 2-for-3 with two doubles at the plate.  On the mound, the junior improved to 13-3 on the year, winning her seventh straight start.  She allowed just one earned run and eight hits to win her third game this week.

The Jackets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two and never looked back.  Amanda Sopko opened the game for R-MC with a double down the right field line.  Two batters, later she scored off a double to right center by Jarvis, who later scored on an error.

In the next inning, Sopko singled through the left side to score Michalann Camp to go up 3-0.  Both R-MC and GC plated a run in the third to make the score 4-1.  Ashley Boteler homered for the Quakers in the fourth to cut the lead to two.

Senior Megan Shepherd sparked two big innings for the Jackets, registering two RBI in the fifth on a single to right field.  After GC scored twice in the sixth, R-MC plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to give the final score.  Shepherd sparked the run with a two-run single through the left side to score Carolyn Gilbertson and Bauer. Sopko capped the scoring with an RBI single that plated Camp.

Sopko paced the Jackets at the dish, going a career-best 5-for-5 with two RBI and one run.  Gilbertson finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.  Shepherd shined on the final game of senior weekend, going 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Kristen Dize picked up the win for R-MC on the hill, pitching a complete game, allowing four runs.  Dize is now 5-3 with four complete games and has won three straight starts. Shelby Bowser took the loss for GC, pitching five innings, while allowing five earned runs.

The Yellow Jackets play their home finale Thursday, April 19th when they play host to Southern Virginia.  The doubleheader is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
