Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va---Randolph-Macon College split a doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in game one to earn a 3-2 victory, while the Marlins took the win in game two, 5-3.
R-MC improved to 11-7 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC handing VWC its first conference loss of the year. The Marlins are now 13-7 on the season, 7-1 in ODAC play.
In game one, Virginia Wesleyan struck first in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on a Yellow Jacket error with two outs. Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Laura Bauer sparked R-MC's rally with a double to left field. Kelly Beard then reached on an error and Carolyn Gilbertson singled to centerfield to load the bases. Amber McCauley followed with a two run single down the right field line that tied the score. Two batters later, Michalann Camp drove in Gilbertson on a sacrifice fly to give R-MC the lead for good.
Bauer paced the Jackets at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 in the win.
Heather Lewis handed Kristina Karagiorgis her first loss of the season and improved to 7-3 on the year. The junior pitched a complete game while surrendering just two runs and striking out six. Karagiorgis threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven to fall to 8-1 on the year.
In game two, VWC jumped out to an early lead as Tori Higginbotham led off the game with a homerun to left centerfield. Higginbotham scored again in the third off a wild pitch to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. After plating two runs in the fourth, Karagiorg homered to centerfield to give VWC a 5-0 advantage.
R-MC battled back in the fifth inning. After back-to-back singles by Gilbertson and Camp, consecutive errors by Virginia Wesleyan allowed both players to score. Megan Shepherd then drove in McCauley to cut the lead to 5-3, but that was as close as the Jackets would come.
Camp, Gilbertson, and Sharese Jarvis recorded the only hits of the nightcap for R-MC. Higginbotham led the Marlins at the dish, going 3-for-3 with a homerun, two runs and two RBI.
Kristen Dize was marked for the loss for R-MC, tossing three innings in the circle while allowing four runs. Lewis relieved her in the fourth, tossing the final three innings of play and allowing just one run.
Randolph-Macon College is back in action tomorrow when the Yellow Jackets play host to Stevenson in a non-conference doubleheader. Game-time is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
