R-MC Baseball Hands #25 Bridgewater First ODAC Loss; Splits Doubleheader

BRIDGEWATER, Va--- Randolph-Macon College split an ODAC doubleheader against Bridgewater at Jopson Field Saturday afternoon.  BC took game one, 8-0 and R-MC picked up the win in game two, 5-3. 

The Yellow Jackets improved to 8-9-1 overall, 4-2 in ODAC play, while the Eagles now stand at 15-6 on the season, 3-1 in conference play.

Game one began as a pitcher's duel with four scoreless innings to open play.  Leading 3-0 late, the Eagles used a five run eighth inning to seal the game. 

Senior Kevin Chandler pitched a complete game shutout to earn the victory. Chandler struck out seven, walked just two and scattered seven hits.  Jamie Hendrick took the loss for the Yellow Jackets falling to 1-2 on the year.  Hendrick tossed seven innings, allowing just three earned runs.

Only four of R-MC's eight runs allowed were earned in game one.

In game two, Bridgewater struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.  R-MC responded, taking the lead in the top of the fourth by scoring three runs off two homeruns.  Jeb Weymouth led off with a solo shot to cut the lead to one.  After a Jordan Walton single, Jon Witt connected on a two-run blast to give R-MC the lead for good.

The Yellow Jackets added two runs in the fifth off a two-run double by Witt that scored Weymouth and Walton.  BC scored a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single by Andrew Hacker.

Michael Helbig (1-1) earned the win for R-MC, pitching five innings while surrendering eight hits and three runs and striking out four.  Ryan Wood recorded his second save of the season, throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.  Joseph Lucas took the loss for Bridgewater, pitching 5.2 innings, while allowing 12 hits and five earned runs.

Witt paced R-MC at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a homerun, a double, four RBI and a run.  Weymouth, Walton, and Zach Broaddus all added two hits in the win.  Hacker led the Eagles at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

The Yellow Jackets return to action March 20th when they look for revenge against Shenandoah in Winchester.  Game-time is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
