Box Score YORK, Pa---Randolph-Macon College scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 7-6 victory over York Thursday afternoon at Jaquet Field. The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-8-1, while the Spartans dropped to 4-8 on the season.
R-MC jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first off consecutive RBI singles by Tim Benjamin and Michael Helbig. The Spartans cut the deficit to one, on an RBI double by Steve Tretter in the bottom of the third.
The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with two outs in the following inning, scoring a run off a Brian Jordan walk that pushed Helbig home to make the score 3-1. York added a score in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one run game again.
Jeb Weymouth led off the fifth, reaching first after being hit by a pitch. He then scored on a throwing error that allowed Jordan Walton to advance to second. Walton scored two batters later off a Helbig single through the right side to make it 5-2.
R-MC scored another run in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 6-2.
York tied the game in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs off three hits, capped by an RBI double by Colbe Herr.
With the game tied at six and two outs in the top of the seventh, Matt Musser doubled to left center to put a runner in scoring position. After an Austin Carpenter single advanced Musser to third, the senior catcher scored the game winning run on an error that allowed Jordan to reach first.
York threatened to tie the game in the last half of the ninth, advancing a runner to third with one out, but Ryan Wood got the final two outs to preserve the win and earn the save.
Helbig led the Yellow Jackets at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Carpenter and Benjamin each added two hits in the win. Tretter and Drew Frankenfield both registered two hits and two RBI for the Spartans.
Glenn McLaughlin (1-0) picked up the win for R-MC, pitching two scoreless innings. KC Beshore took the loss for York, allowing a run in one inning of work.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, March 17th when they travel to Bridgewater for an ODAC doubleheader.
