Box Score ASHLAND, Va--- Randolph-Macon College Baseball defeated Johns Hopkins, 15-8 Tuesday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park. The Yellow Jackets improved 6-8-1, while the Blue Jays dropped to 2-4-2 on the year.
The win marked the first victory over JHU for the since 1969. Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series 13-7, but R-MC avenged an 8-5 loss in last year's NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Jays raced out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first. The Jackets scored two runs in the bottom of the third off consecutive RBI singles from Jon Witt and Michael Helbig. R-MC added two more runs in the fourth off an RBI double by Jeb Weymouth. Jake Fletcher scored on a fielder's choice for Witt's second RBI of the game to cut the lead to 5-4.
After Johns Hopkins added a run, the Yellow Jackets put the game away in the following inning, putting nine runs on the board off seven hits. Andrew Cheatham led off the frame being hit by a pitch and Matt Musser followed with a double. Austin Carpenter then singled in Cheatham to cut the deficit back to one. Jordan Walton drove in a run off an error to tie the game and Weymouth walked in a run to take the lead for good. After a two run single by Musser and an RBI base hit by Carpenter, R-MC left the inning with a 13-6 lead.
Both Randolph-Macon and Johns Hopkins scored a run in the sixth and the Yellow Jackets plated their final runs in the bottom of the seventh off an RBI double by Jake Fletcher. JHU scored its final run in the top of the ninth to give the final score.
Musser finished 3-of-6 from the plate with two runs and two RBI. Walton and Carpenter added 3-for-5 performances with two runs in the win. Brian Jordan, Fletcher, Weymouth and Helbig each totaled two hits in helping R-MC to 19 total hits in the game. Aaron Borenstein paced the Blue Jays at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
James Overbeek (1-0) led a committee of pitchers on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, earning the win. Brooks Snead chipped in three innings of scoreless ball in the victory. Blake Platt took the loss for the Blue Jays.
R-MC returns to action Thursday, March 15th when it travels to York (Pa.) for a non-conference matchup. Game-time scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
