Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va--- Randolph-Macon College baseball split a double-header with ODAC foe Lynchburg College Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took game one 6-4 and fell in the nightcap, 7-5. R-MC improves to 5-8-1 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC, while LC dropped to 9-4 on the season, 2-2 in conference play.
Randolph-Macon is now 4-4 against Lynchburg over the past eight contests.
Lynchburg opened game one by taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Hornets added two more runs to their lead in the top of the sixth when Dustin Arrowood drove in his second run of the contest to make it 4-0.
R-MC rallied in the bottom of the seventh putting four runs on the board to tie the score. With the bases loaded with one out, Brian Jordan walked to register his sixth RBI of the year. Jake Fletcher then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Macon Heikes and Austin Carpenter scored all the way from second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Two batters later, Jeb Weymouth singled to right field to drive in Jordan.
With the score tied at four in the seventh, Lynchburg loaded the bases with no outs before R-MC was forced to go the bullpen. Senior Ryan Wood entered in relief and retired the side, pulling Randolph-Macon out of the jam.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases again with one out. R-MC would score the eventual game-winning run when Fletcher was hit by a pitch, scoring Heikes. Weymouth walked in the next at-bat, sending Carpenter home to give the final score.
Carpenter led the Jackets at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a run on the day. Weymouth and Heikes recorded the other two hits for Randolph-Macon. Richard Palase paced the Hornets, going 2-for-5 with two runs.
Wood earned his second victory of the year, tossing two scoreless innings. Jamie Hendrick started the game pitching six innings, giving up three runs and striking out two. Michael Mansfield picked up the loss for Lynchburg in relief.
In the night cap, Lynchburg started the game scoring two runs in the top of the first. This time R-MC responded, scoring twice in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game off three straight doubles by Jordan, Fletcher, and Weymouth.
LC regained the lead in the top of the fourth off a sac fly by Lincoln Evans. The Jackets tied the game in the bottom half, when Heikes scored on an error to make it 3-3.
After Lynchburg scored again in the fifth, R-MC plated two runs to take the lead, 5-4 on an RBI single to left field by Matt Musser.
LC responded scoring one run in the sixth and adding two insurance runs in the eighth to put the game away and give the final 7-5 score.
Fletcher and Musser each finished with two hits and an RBI, while Jordan added two hits and a run. Dan Savage led LC at the dish, finishing 3-for-5 on the contest.
James Womack picked up the win for the Hornets, tossing four innings of shut-out baseball, while Kevin Soltis took the loss for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Tuesday, March 13th when they play host to Johns Hopkins.
