Box Score ASHLAND, VA – A 26-8 run late in the second-half by Virginia Union sent the Panthers to a 73-61 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 1-8 as the Division II Panthers improve to 3-3 on the season.
R-MC jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first five minutes of play, capped by a Sarah Parsons jumper. Parsons led all scorers in the first-half with 10 points in just eight minutes of play.
VUU responded with a 15-8 run to tie the game up at 18 apiece with 8:16 left on the clock.
R-MC closed out the half with a 10 point advantage after Nicole Freeman and Khajae Hester went 4-of-4 from the line with less than a minute left to play.
The Yellow Jackets started out the second-half strong taking a 14 point lead at 43-29 after Hannah Livermon drained a three-pointer just over three minutes into play.
The Panthers began to chip away at the 14 point deficit over the next 11 minutes and took the lead, 57-56, with 5:36 left in the game.
VUU would then outscore R-MC 16-5 in the final five minutes of the game to secure the 73-61 victory.
Four Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures, led by Hester who posted a career-high 14 points on the afternoon. Parsons recorded 13 points, while teammates Katie Anderson and Livermon chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively. Kellie Cortina was just shy of posting a double-double, finishing with nine points to match her nine rebounds.
VUU was led by Ashle Freeman who led all scorers with 27 points and six steals. Danielle Ferguson and Denesha Tatum joined Freeman in double-figures, posting 10 and 11, respectively. ShaHadah Barret had a solid overall game, finishing with eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and six steals.
Ferguson and Tatum each pulled in seven rebounds to help VUU to 41-38 rebounding advantage over the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Monday, December 17th, when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to play Hartwick College. Tip-off is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
