Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, VA--- Randolph-Macon fell to #12 Mary Washington, 4-0 in Field Hockey action Sunday afternoon. The women dropped to 2-5 on the year, while the Eagles improved to 6-1 on the season.
The contest was the third time R-MC has taken on a ranked opponent this season, as they took on #13 Christopher Newport in the season-opener and #17 Juniata last weekend. #12 Mary Washington lost it's only match of the year to Wesley on Friday. They have defeated two top-15 teams in #5 Lebanon Valley College and #13 (at the time) Lynchburg. The Yellow Jackets have now dropped two straight contests against the Eagles. They have not defeated UMW since 2009 when they won their regular season finale in Fredericksburg.
UMW had numerous opportunities in the first half, but couldn't convert as both teams headed into the intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
Kaitlyn Ripley scored back-to-back goals early in the second half to give Mary Washington a quick 2-0 lead. She scored her first goal just under two minutes into the second period off an assist from Caitlin Baker. Her second goal came just four minutes later, giving the Eagles a two goal advantage.
In the 64th minute, Lisa Charney found the back of the cage to push the edge to three goals. Baker then scored four minutes later off a double assist from Florence George and Charney to give the final score.
Mary Washington outshot Randolph-Macon, 27-12 including 9-1 in the first half. The Yellow Jackets were aggressive in the second half though, registering 11 shots in the period. The Eagles also held a 12-7 edge in penalty corners.
Carrie Jacobs led R-MC with five shots, two on goal. Lauren Seal chipped in with three shots on the afternoon, two on goal.
Nicole Woodworth took the loss in goal for Randolph-Macon, despite recording 15 saves in the contest. Claire Gianelle picked up the win between the pipes for Mary Washington, blocking seven shots.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, September 24th when they travel to Lynchburg to take on the nationally ranked Hornets (#9 in the latest NFHCA Coaches Poll). The match is the first ODAC-contest for both teams Lynchburg and is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
