Box Score R-MC Baseball closed out the 2011 regular season with a 6-4 win
over Mary Washington Sunday in Ashland as the Yellow Jackets
honored their seven senior student-athletes. Kyle Hicks picked up
the win on the mound while fellow senior Josh Ellwood tossed
two scoreless inning of relief to secure the victory.
Brian
Jordan went 3-for-5 with a homerun and two RBI to pace the
Yellow Jacket offense which totaled 15 hits. Greg Mitro drove in a
pair of runs and drew two walks on a 1-for-2 day at the dish. Jordan Walton
finished 3-for-4 and notched his NCAA best 30th double.
Seniors Jay
Lichter and Cory Jackson chipped
in with two hits while Peter Culver and Jeb Weymouth
also had a pair of singles.
Hicks improves to 4-1 on the season after allowing four earned
runs over seven innings while striking out five. Ellwood gave up
just one hit in two innings of relief to pick up his first save of
the season.
Jackson Clement led the Eagles' attack with a 2-for-3 outing
that included a homerun and two RBI. Ben Sisk and Seth Jordan both
had a pair of singles. Torey Mancari gave up three runs in three
innings for his first loss of the season.
Mary Washington struck in the top of the first when Clement
sacrificed home Beattie Southerland and Mitchell Herringshaw plated
a run with a single.
Randolph-Macon tied the score in the bottom of the second when
Jordan belted a two run homerun over the wall in right, his second
homerun in as many days.
Clements' solo shot in the third put the Eagles ahead 3-2 but
the Yellow Jackets evened the score in the bottom half on a Jake Fletcher
run scoring sacrifice fly.
R-MC took the lead in the sixth after Weymouth singled and then
scored on a Walton double down the left field line. Mitro pushed
the advantage to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly that scored Walton.
UMW pulled within one in the seventh on an Eric Rehbein
sacrifice fly but a Mitro single in the eighth extended the lead to
6-4.
Ellwood silenced the Mary Washington bats again in the top of
the ninth to secure the 6-4 victory.
Randolph-Macon will now await their regional site and opponent
for the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament which will be
announced Sunday May 15th.
