Langford Saves the Ninth as Randolph-Macon Advances to Championship Game

Box Score

R-MC reliever Dale Langford got out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the ninth to secure the Yellow Jackets' 6-5 win over Bridgewater and a bid to the ODAC Baseball Tournament Championship game Friday in Lynchburg. Randolph-Macon Baseball will now play at 1:00 Saturday at City Stadium in Lynchburg, VA and their opponent is still to be determined.

Greg Mitro paced R-MC at the dish going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Jay Lichter also totaled three hits and drove in a run. Jordan Walton went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base. Jeb Weymouth and Peter Culver chipped in with two hits each.

Randolph-Macon starter Michael Helbig picks up the win after allowing four earned runs on ten hits and striking out four in eight innings on the mound. Langford gave up just two hits and no runs with one strikeout for his third save of the season.

Alex Nuttycombe led the Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 game. Bryan Sanderson finished with two hits and an RBI while Andrew Hacker also chipped in with two hits.

Robert Gallet is stuck with the loss after allowing two earned runs on seven hits in two innings on the bump. Kyle Henshaw gave up two earned in five and a third innings of relief with three strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets jumped on top early with run scoring singles from Mitro and Lichter in the first inning.

Randolph-Macon extended their lead to 4-0 in the third after Walton tripled home Weymouth and scored on a Mitro single. Walton contributed to the offense again in the fifth with an RBI single to give the Jackets a 5-0 edge.

Bridgewater rallied for three runs in the sixth inning on three hits and three Randolph-Macon errors.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on a key insurance run in the top of the eighth when Mitro singled up the middle to bring home Culver.

BC led off the bottom of the ninth with a pair of singles from Brett Howell and Jake Wade. Nuttycombe then singled down the left line to plate Howell and pull the Eagles within two at 6-4. Sanderson followed with an RBI single to cut the advantage to one. A bunt single from Devon Snow then loaded the bases with no outs and the heart of the Bridgewater lineup due to the plate.

Langford then induced a comebacker groundout before striking out Jonathan Mason for the second out of the inning. Hacker then stepped to the dish and hit a fly ball to right which was tracked down by the Jackets' rightfielder Fletcher for the third and final out.

Randolph-Macon advances to the ODAC Tournament Championship game Saturday, April 23 at 1:00, opponent is still to be announced.
