Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon Softball team saw its season come to a close on Thursday with a pair of defeats at the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship in Salem, Va. R-MC lost to Guilford 2-0, and then dropped a 2-1 decision to Eastern Mennonite to be eliminated from the tournament.
The Yellow Jackets finish the season with a record of 21-13 overall. It marks the fourth-time in the last five years that R-MC has reached the 20 win plateau.
In the day's first game versus Guilford, the only runs came in the Quaker first inning. After the first two batters were retired, the Jackets committed an error GC capitalized on when the next batter reached on a fielder's choice and Morgan Andrews followed with a 2 RBI single.
Jessica Burchman made the runs stand up, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 on the way to her 14th win of the year. Burchman outdueled R-MC starter Heather Lewis, who allowed just five hits and struck out three in the loss.
In the nightcap against EMU, a costly two out error led to a run as the Royals took a 1-0 lead in its first at bat on a Molly Smith double.
After the Royals tacked on a single run in the second, R-MC was able to crack the scoreboard in its fourth inning. The Jackets got a single from Michalann Camp, scoring Brittany Ragland who had pinch run for Laura Bauer who singled earlier in the inning.
That would be as close as R-MC would get as Smith would give way to Lisa Lee who pitched three innings of relief to pick up the save, allowing just one hit.
