Box Score Randolph-Macon's Jordan Walton brought his season doubles total to 26 by belting three in the Yellow Jackets 9-5 ODAC Tournament win over Lynchburg Thursday night at City Stadium. Walton's 26 doubles breaks the ODAC single season record last set in 2002. The Yellow Jackets will take on Bridgewater Friday, April 22 at 11:00 am.
Walton led R-MC at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI to compliment his three doubles. Peter Culver also finished 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Cory Jackson plated two with a double and a single while Jake Fletcher chipped in with three hits including a double.
Jackets' starter Jamie Hendrick took a no hitter into the seventh inning before Lynchburg broke through with three runs on five hits. The lefty struck out five and walked three to improve his season record to 5-2. James Bierlein closed out the final two innings, allowing no earned runs (two unearned) and one hit while striking out four.
The Hornets' were led at the dish by Michael Kenah who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. LC tallied six hits for the game with their only extra base hit coming off the bat of Jake Tanner who doubled home two runs.
James Womack is saddled with the loss for Lynchburg after allowing three runs on four hits over two and a third innings. The freshman walked two and struck out one. Michael Mansfield tossed five innings of relief and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out five.
Randolph-Macon notched the scoring column in the second inning when Walton doubled to left and scored later in the inning on a Jackson double which also plated Jay Lichter.
Culver scored on a Walton double in the third and Greg Mitro extended the R-MC lead to 4-0 later in the inning with a run scoring single to right.
Randolph-Macon sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the fourth and pushed across three runs on five hits. RBI singles from Culver, Jeb Weymouth and Lichter highlighted the rally which put the Yellow Jackets ahead 7-0. R-MC stretched the lead to 9-0 in the fifth with a run scoring triple from Culver and a Walton sacrifice fly.
Lynchburg's Jordan Watkins singled to right with one out in the seventh inning to break up Hendrick's no hit bid and was followed by Dan Savage who also singled. Kenah plated Watkins later in the inning with a single before Richard Palase and Mike Walters drove in a run each.
LC rallied again in the eighth with two runs on a Tanner double down the left field line to pull within four at 9-5.
Jackets' closer Bierlein ended the Hornets' comeback attempt in the bottom of ninth by striking out all three batters he faced to preserve the 9-5 ODAC Tournament victory.
Randolph-Macon will now face Bridgewater College Friday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. The Eagles also sit 2-0 through two days of the tournament after eliminating Washington and Lee Thursday afternoon.
Lynchburg takes on Hampden-Sydney College in an elimination game at 3:00.
