Box Score 2 Roanoke College (27-9 / 12-6 ODAC) took game one 4-1 and staved off a late Randolph-Macon (21-9 / 11-7 ODAC) rally in game two for a 3-1 win and a softball doubleheader sweep in Salem Monday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets now enter the 2011 ODAC Softball tournament as the No. 4 seed where they will face Guilford College Thursday, April 21 at 12:00.
Laura Bauer paced the Yellow Jackets in game one going 1-for-2 with a homerun and was hit by a pitch. Paige Smith led the way for R-MC in game two with a 3-for-4 outing while Michalann Camp was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Brandi Wilson is saddled with the game one loss after allowing no earned runs (four unearned) over four and two thirds innings. Kristen Dize started in the circle for Randolph-Macon in game two and gave up two earned runs over six innings.
Leona Rainey paced the Maroons at the dish going 5-for-7 over the doubleheader with an RBI.
Lis Norwich went the distance for RC in game one, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Stephanie Clark notched the game two win after tossing five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Abigail Rexrode gave up one run and struck out four in two innings of relief for the save.
Bauer put the Jackets ahead 1-0 in the second inning of game one when she blasted a solo homerun over the wall in left.
Roanoke responded in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Rainey to tie the game at 1-1.
The Maroons took the lead in the fifth when Holly Warlitner triple home a run. Run scoring doubles from Stephanie Clark and Meghan Weingard stretched the advantage to 4-1 which would prove to be the game one final.
Felice Lowery plated the first Roanoke run in game two when she reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning. Katherine Kouri followed two batters later and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Maroons pushed their lead to 3-0 in third after Warlitner brought home Rainey with a sacrifice fly to right.
Randolph-Macon loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with singles from Smith and Bauer before Shepherd reached on a fielder's choice. Michalann Camp then stepped to the plate with one out and plated Smith with a fielder's choice to pull the Jackets within three. Roanoke's reliever Rexrode then settled in and struck out the next two batters to end the scoring threat.
RC held R-MC scoreless in the seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 3-1 win.
The Yellow Jackets now enter the 2011 ODAC Softball Tournament as the No. 4 seed where they will face the fifth seeded Quakers of Guilford College Thursday, April 21 at 12:00. The double-elimination tournament begins on Thursday, April 21 and continues through Saturday, April 23. All games will be played at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
