Box Score Behind nine strong innings from starting pitcher Kyle Hicks and a four RBI effort from Jordan Walton, Randolph-Macon baseball knocked off Virginia Wesleyan 6-2 in Norfolk Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets improve to 16-16 (10-6 ODAC) while the Marlins fall to 15-19 (8-8 ODAC).
Hicks allowed two runs over the first two innings but settled in to hold Virginia Wesleyan to just three hits over the next seven innings. The righty allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out two for the complete game win.
Walton paced the Jackets at the dish going 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and four RBI. Jay Lichter was 2-for-2 at the plate with three walks and an RBI. Brian Jordan scored three of R-MC's six runs and finished 2-for-3.
Ryan Matalon is saddled with the loss after allowing one earned run in the top of the seventh. Alex DeJesus gave up two earned in six and third innings with four walks and a strikeout.
Shayne Paskanik and Mitch Green both went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Marlins. Josh Miller's double was the games' only extra base hit.
Jordan led off the top of the first with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a Peter Culver sacrifice bunt. A Walton single later in the inning scored Jordan and put the Jackets ahead 1-0.
VWC answered with a run in the bottom half when Paskanik singled home Pike Brynildsen. The Marlins threatened to take the lead after loading the bases with one out but Hicks induced a double play ball to end the inning.
Miller put Virginia Wesleyan ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second after leading off the inning with a double and then scoring on a Ryan Estrella single.
Hicks and DeJesus remained locked in a 2-1 pitchers duel until Randolph-Macon broke through with a two out, two run single from Walton in the seventh to put R-MC on top 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a Lichter RBI single and a pair of sacrifice flies off the bat of Walton and Cory Jackson.
Hicks held VWC hitless in the bottom half of the ninth to secure the 6-2 win and their tenth ODAC victory of the season.
Randolph-Macon travels to rival Hampden-Sydney Saturday, April 16th for a noon doubleheader to conclude their ODAC schedule.
