Box Score

ASHLAND, VA – Justin Butler scored four times and Jason Crawford made 16 saves in net as Randolph-Macon held off visiting Christopher Newport, 12-11, Wednesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action. The victory improves R-MC's record to 6-1, tying the 1994 Yellow Jackets for the best start in school history.

Joining Butler in the scoring column was Jake Leddy with four points on two goals and two assists. Patrick Egan had three goals, while Tim Rowe chipped in with a pair of goals, including what proved to be the game-winner.

CNU (3-2) was paced by John Glaser who had a hat trick, while Chase Walton, Kyle Pasta and Matt Gleisner each had a pair of scores in the loss. Andy McGregor made 11 stops in the cage for the Captains as well.

Rowe and Leddy gave R-MC and early 2-0 lead before CNU got on the board with 10:34 to go in the first quarter.

Back-to-back goals by Butler and Eagan pushed the R-MC advantage to 4-1 with 7:37 to go in the opening quarter.

The Captains closed out the quarter scoring three of the final four goals to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 5-4. CNU then tied the game 20 seconds into the second stanza on a man up strike by Pasta.

The score stayed that way until just under eight minutes to play in the half when a Leddy tally sparked what proved to be a 5-0 run for R-MC to close half and included goals by Brian Rowe, Egan and pair by Butler, including one with just five seconds left on the clock.

There was no scoring for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter, but an Adam Abbate goal proved to be the first of four CNU tallies to close out the period, cutting the R-MC lead to 10-9.

Butler pushed the Jackets' back out in front 11-9 with a strike with just under 12 minutes to play in the game. A Time Rowe score with 6:48 extended the R-MC advantage to 12-9.

A goal by Glaser with 4:20 to play pulled CNU within one. The Captains then got an EMO opportunity late and capitalized when Gleisner scored with just 28 seconds left to make the score 12-11.

R-MC was able to ice the game on the ensuing face off, forcing CNU into its own end of the field as time expired.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when opens up ODAC play at Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
