Box Score 2 Greg Mitro's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of game one scored Nick Digby and sent Randolph-Macon Baseball (10-6 / 6-0 ODAC) to a 6-5 win over Lynchburg on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets scored ten runs in the third inning of game two to complete their first season sweep of Lynchburg since 1996.
Jeb Weymouth paced R-MC at the plate, going 6-for-10 over the doubleheader with five RBI and a double. Jordan Walton finished 5-for-10 with a double and three RBI while Mitro had four hits that included a double and two RBI.
Dale Langford earned the game one win after tossing an inning and a third, allowing no hits and striking out one. James Bierlein threw a hitless eighth and ninth while striking out four to pick up his third save of the season. Game one starter Jamie Hendrick allowed four earned runs over five and two thirds with three strikeouts.
Michael Helbig improved to 3-1on the season with the win in game two. The sophomore gave up just two earned runs and four hits while striking out one. Justin Thorn, Josh Ellwood and Kevin Soltis tossed the final three innings to preserve the R-MC win.
Lynchburg notched the scoring column first in game one when Mike Walters doubled to lead off the third inning and later scored on an error.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the fourth with RBI doubles from Walton and Digby and an RBI base hit from Jay Lichter.
R-MC pushed their lead to 4-1 in fifth on back to back doubles from Mitro and Weymouth.
Lynchburg pulled ahead 5-4 after pushing across two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth. LC threatened to extend their lead in the sixth with one on and two out but Jackets' reliever Langford came on to pitch induced a fly ball out to retire the side.
Mitro's single through the left side in the seventh put runners and first and second for Weymouth who ripped a single to right that scored Brian Jordan and tied the game at 5-5.
Randolph-Macon loaded the bases in the top of the eighth before Mitro stepped to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Digby and giving the Jackets a 6-5 edge.
After Michael Kenah reached base on an R-MC error, Bierlein struck out the side and secured the Yellow Jackets 6-5 game one victory.
James Womack is stuck with the loss for Lynchburg after allowing one earned over two and two thirds. Walters paced the Hornet's attack going 3-for-4 with two doubles.
Chris Colquhoun singled home Richard Palase in the first inning of game two to give LC an early 1-0 lead. Lynchburg had two runners on with two outs in the second when Walters to doubled to left, scoring one run but Randolph-Macon's left fielder Jordan threw out Jordan Watkins at the plate to end the inning.
The Yellow Jackets' offense exploded in the top of the third, scoring 10 runs on four hits, two Hornet errors, two hits batsmen and five walks. Walton singled home two runs before Cory Jackson drew a bases loaded walks. Peter Culver and Digby plated a run each with RBI singles and Bierlein sacrificed home another. Weymouth capped the inning with a two run single to center.
Randolph-Macon tacked on one more in the fourth and fifth innings and two addition runs in the sixth before winning by a final of 14-3.
Michael Mansfield is saddled with the loss after allowing five earned runs over two and a third innings. Watkins threw the final four innings for Lynchburg, scattering three hits and no runs.
R-MC returns to action Wednesday, March 16th when they host ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan at 3:00.
