Box Score 2 The Yellow Jackets scored 28 runs on 37 hits over two games to
sweep EMU 19-6 and 9-3 in the ODAC opener Saturday. Randolph-Macon
Baseball improves to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Jeb
Weymouth led R-MC at the plate in game one, going 5-for-6 with
four RBI and a double. Greg Mitro (4-for-5,
RBI, double), Jordan Walton
(4-for-6, RBI, two doubles) and Peter Culver
(4-for-5, 2 RBI, double) all chipped in with four hits a piece at
the dish. Cory
Jackson drove in a game high five runs on 3-for-6 hitting with
a homerun while Jay Lichter plated
four Yellow Jackets on a 3-for-5 game at the plate with a
double.
Randolph-Macon opened up the offense when Weymouth sacrificed
home Brian
Jordan and Walton doubled home Mitro in the first.
Eastern Mennonite answered in the bottom half with a Chris
Harpine solo homerun to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more in the second on a
Weymouth single which scored Nick Digby and James Bierlein.
EMU tied the game in the bottom of the stanza with a three run,
two out rally. Ryan McAlister doubled home Jake Norman for the
innings' first run before Adrian Perez scored on a passed ball and
Beau Banglesdorf drew bases loaded walk to make the score 4-4.
R-MC reclaimed their lead in the third on a Culver RBI single
and then went for four runs in the fourth to take a 9-4 edge.
The Royals looked to rally in the bottom of the fourth with the
bases loaded and no outs, but Jackets' reliever Carlos Perez limited
the damage to just one run on a sacrifice fly before retiring the
side.
Randolph-Macon put the game away in the seventh, scoring five
runs, three coming on a Jackson homerun. R-MC tacked on three more
in the ninth to take game one 19-6.
Perez picks up the win after allowing just one earned run over
three innings while striking out three. Josh Ellwood
scattered two hits and gave up no runs in the final three innings
to earn the save.
Banglesdorf led the Royals at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a
homerun and two RBI. Jason Tate allowed nine earned runs and struck
out four in the loss.
The Yellow Jackets had the bats going early again in game two,
scoring three runs, two on RBI singles from Jackson and Culver.
Eastern Mennonite responded with two in the bottom of the third
to cut the deficit to one after B.J. Mortimer doubled home Perez
and Dylan Smith plated a run with a groundout.
Mitro ripped a double in the fourth to score Bierlein that
opened up a four run inning for the Jackets. Walton then singled
home Mitro and Lichter plated Weymouth before Walton capped the
inning by stealing home.
Walton stretched the R-MC lead to 9-2 in the fifth when he
belted a two run double that scored Mitro and Jordan.
The Yellow Jackets held the Royals to just one run in the sixth
before the game called due to darkness after six innings.
Michael
Helbig limited EMU to just three runs on six hits to improve to
2-1 on the season. The sophomore righty struck out three and posts
a 2.55 ERA in his three appearances this season.
Andy Richter allowed eight earned over four and a third innings
while walking nine and striking out five in the loss.
Randolph-Macon Baseball travels to St. Mary's College Wednesday,
March 2nd for a 2:00 matchup. The Jackets are 1-1
against the Seahawks after splitting a doubleheader to open the
2011 season.
