Box Score 2 Heather Lewis and Kristen Dize combined for 12 shutout innings and two wins on Wednesday in Ashland as Randolph-Macon Softball opened their 2011 season with a doubleheader sweep of Mary Washington 3-0 and 8-0.
Lewis tossed a complete game shutout as the Randolph-Macon took game one by the score of 3-0. The southpaw scattered seven hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter to pick up her first win of the season in the circle.
Mary Washington's Elizabeth Crowe matched Lewis through the first three innings. In the fourth, Paige Smith singled with one out and Laura Bauer followed with a homerun to put the Jackets up 2-0.
R-MC tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Morgan Greene walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and went on to third on a Paige Smith single. Megan Shepherd delivered an RBI single with two outs to bring her home.
In game two, Dize allowed just one hit over five innings for a complete game shutout. The sophomore allowed just three runners to reach base, none of them advancing beyond second.
Randolph-Macon took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Smith and a Shepherd run scoring single.
The Jackets struck again in the third inning, this time for six runs on four hits and an Eagles' error. Smith led off with a solo homerun and was followed by Shepherd two batters later who also homered. Lacey Berry singled home Lauryn Nanny before Michalann Camp drove in two runs with a single to put R-MC up 8-0 which would hold to be the final.
Smith went 4-for-6 at the plate with a homerun, a double and two RBI to lead R-MC offensively. Shepherd finished 3-for-6 with a homerun and three RBI.
Randolph-Macon Softball returns to action Saturday, February 26th when they host Frostburg State for a 1:30 doubleheader.
