Box Score Randolph-Macon starting pitcher Jamie Hendrick allowed just one earned run over six and two thirds innings Wednesday in Ashland en route to a 4-2 win over Wesley College. The Jackets' snap the Wolverines' 15 game win streak that dated back to April 28th, 2010.
Wolverines' starter Andrew Cooper and Hendrick were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the Yellow Jacket broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Peter Culver led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Brian Jordan sacrifice bunt. Jeb Weymouth followed Jordan with a single before R-MC's first baseman Jordan Walton ripped a two run double to straight away center that put the Jackets up 2-0.
Cory Jackson led off the sixth for Randolph-Macon with a double off the 16 foot wall in left field and scored later in the inning on a Wesley error.
The Wolverines put runners on first and second with two outs on back to back singles from Seth Hastings and Greg McKee. Jon Carlson then singled to right, scoring Hastings and putting runners at the corners. Wesley then capitalized on a Randolph-Macon error to pull within one at 3-2. Dale Langford then came on to pitch in relief and induced a fly ball out to end the threat.
Jay Lichter added an insurance run for the Jackets in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to center.
R-MC closer James Bierlein silenced the Wesley bats in the final two innings, allowing no runs and just two hits to secure the Yellow Jackets' 4-2 win.
Walton finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the Randolph-Macon attack. Lichter went 2-for-3 with an RBI while second baseman Greg Mitro also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
Hendrick improves to 2-0 on the season after giving up just one earned run and striking out four. Langford retired the only batter he faced and Bierlien tossed two scoreless on the back end to earn his second save of the season.
Kevin Murphy extended his hit streak to 36 games with a 2-for-4 day at the plate for the Wolverines. Carlson and McKee also had two hits; Carlson drove in Wesley's only earned run.
Randolph-Macon travels to Eastern Mennonite Saturday, February 26th for their first ODAC matchup of the 2011 season. First pitch is slated for 12:00 in Harrisonburg.
