Box Score ASHLAND, VA -- Maggie Roy scored her 1,000th point in a 74-48 loss in the opening game of the 2011 Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic. The Yellow Jackets fell to 1-1 on the year, while the Captains improved to 1-0 on the young season.
CNU picked up right where they left off last season after making a run to the Final Four in the 2010-11 campaign. The Captains shot a scorching 67% from the field in the first stanza. Both teams battled back and forth over the opening 10 minutes of play as the lead changed hands five times.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to an early 12-10 lead off two three pointers by Roy four minutes into the contest. Christopher Newport would respond, taking the lead for good at 22-18 on three consecutive layups by Andrea Hobbs. The Captains would close the half on a 23-6 run to take a 45-24 advantage heading into the half.
Roy reached the 1,000 point plateau on a layup at the 15:31 mark in the second half. She finished with 15 points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds. The senior captain is averaging 14 points per contest on the year and now has 1,006 points and counting for her career. Taylor Wieczorek added 10 points and four boards, while Jillian Asay pulled down a team-best six caroms.
The Captains were led by Nicole Mitchell who posted 19 points and six rebounds. Hobbs chipped in 14 points, while Tia Perry tossed in 10 markers on the contest.
R-MC shot just 28.6% from the field and finished the game 3-of-16 from behind the arc.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow as they play host to Mary Washington in the final contest of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic. Game-time is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start. Roanoke and CNU will open the day at 2:00 p.m.
