Box Score R-MC Junior Maggie Roy knocked
down a three with 11.4 seconds on the clock to give
Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball (9-4 / 7-1 ODAC) a 73-71 lead
over Roanoke which held to be the final in Salem Friday night.
With just under nine minutes to go in the first half, sophomore
Jordan
Cantrell knocked down a trifecta to put the Jackets up
22-16.
Roanoke's Rebecca Bays cut the deficit to two with 6:51 on the
clock before Roy answered with a three on the next Randolph-Macon
possession to extend the lead to 29-24.
Two Lindsay Sharman free throws pushed the R-MC advantage to
35-28 with just under two minutes and the Jackets headed into the
locker room with a 38-33 lead after a Rachel Dellahunt jumper on
the Maroons' last possession.
Roanoke opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 43-40
lead with 18 minutes to go.
The two teams traded baskets and the lead until the Maroons
scored five straight points to take a 69-63 advantage with four
minutes left.
R-MC responded with a jumper from Taylor Wieczorek
and a layup from Christina Phelps
to pull within two.
A pair of Katie Williams'
free throws cut the Roanoke lead to 71-70 with a 1:42 to play.
Both teams played tough defense over the next minute before Roy
buried a three with six seconds left to give R-MC a 73-71 edge
which would prove to be the final.
Roy and Williams led the way offensively for R-MC with 12 points
each. Wieczorek dropped in eight points to go with her 10
rebounds.
Randolph-Macon shot 37% from the field including at 9-for-24
mark from three and held a 43-37 rebounding edge.
The Jackets return to action Saturday, January 15th
when they travel to Hollins for a 4:00 ODAC matchup.
