ASHLAND, VA—Seven Yellow Jackets had a multi-hit game as
Randolph-Macon Baseball defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 15-8 in
Ashland Thursday. With the win, R-MC improves to 13-12 overall
while NCWC falls to 15-16.
Tyler Clark put the Bishops on the board with an RBI single in
the top of the first. Denver Nixon extended the lead to 2-0 with a
sacrifice fly to left which scored Jake Alexander.
Randolph-Macon responded with a run in the bottom half when Brian Jordan
(Columbia, VA/ Goochland) scored on a Jordan Walton
(Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee Davis) sacrifice fly.
The Yellow Jackets sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of
the second, scoring seven runs on eight hits. Cory Jackson
(Beaverdam, VA/ PH-Ashland) led off with a double and advanced to
third on a James Bierlein
(Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) single. Ryan Hughes (Crozet,
VA/ Western Albemarle) singled home Jackson with a single for the
first run off the inning.
Kevin Davis
(Hanover, VA/ Hanover) then stepped to the plate with the bases
loaded and belted a three run double to left center. RBI singles
from Jackson, Walton and Adam Carpenter
(Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) capped the inning and put R-MC up 8-2.
An RBI double from Jay Lichter (Richmond,
VA/ Varina) scored Walton in the bottom of the third. Lichter would
score later in the inning on a Carpenter single.
Two run singles from both Pat Laffin and Joel Creef in the top
of the fourth pulled North Carolina Wesleyan within four at 10-6.
Hughes led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple to right
center and would score on a Jordan sacrifice fly to put
Randolph-Macon up 11-6.
The Bishops pulled within three after pushing across a run in
both the fifth and sixth innings but the Jackets responded with two
runs in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and a Walton RBI
single to extend their lead to 13-8.
Jordan singled home two runs in the bottom of the seventh to
seal the game for Randolph-Macon at 15-8.
Carlos
Perez (Humacao, Puerto Rico/ Fairfax) picks up his first
collegiate win after allowing just two runs and striking out two in
the start. Justin
Thorn (Mechanicsville, VA/ Hanover) and Byron Mendenhall
(Falls Church, VA/ George Mason) combined for three scoreless
innings of relief on the back end.
Walton and Davis both finished 3-for-5 with a double and three
runs batted in. Jordan went 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBI.
Carpenter, Hughes and Lichter chipped in with three hits for the
Jackets who totaled 21 on the day.
Kaleb Wessell is stuck with the loss after allowing eight runs
in one and a third innings of work for NCWC.
Clark paced the Bishops at the plate with a 3-for-5 game while
also driving in two runs.
Randolph-Macon travels to Guilford College Saturday, April
10th for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
