ASHLAND, VA— Freshman shortstop Ryan Hughes went 5-for-5
with a double, a triple and three RBI as Randolph-Macon Baseball
defeated Christopher Newport 12-1 in Ashland Tuesday. R-MC improves
to 12-12 overall while CNU falls to 16-11.
James Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) hit a two out double
down the left field line in the bottom of the second and later
scored on a Hughes (Crozet, VA/ Western Albemarle) double down the
line to give the Jackets an early 1-0 lead.
Randolph-Macon went up 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI double from
Jake Fletcher (Deltaville, VA/ Middlesex).
Ben Lenda pulled CNU within one after leading off the top of the
fifth with a solo homerun to left field.
Hughes scored Jay Lichter (Richmond, VA/ Varina) with a single
through the right side in the bottom of the sixth to put
Randolph-Macon back up by two.
The Yellow Jackets then rallied for six runs on seven hits in
the bottom of the seventh. Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/ Goochland)
led off with a single and then scored on a Kevin Davis (Hanover,
VA/ Hanover) double to left center. A bases loaded infield single
off the bat of Lichter then extended the lead to 5-1. Adam
Carpenter (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) hit an RBI sacrifice fly
before Hughes singled home another run. Fletcher capped the inning
with a two run single up the middle, putting R-MC up 9-1.
Carpenter belted a three run homerun to left field in the bottom
of the eighth to push the Randolph-Macon lead to 12-1, which would
hold to be the final.
Starting pitcher Matt Tiller (Midlothian, VA/ Clover Hill)
picked up his second win of the season after allowing just one run
on three hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Bierlein
did not allow a hit in three innings of work and Jordan pitched a
hitless top of the ninth.
Hughes paced the Jackets with a 5-for-5 game including a triple,
a double, and three RBI; Carpenter had a homerun and four RBI.
Fletcher went 2-for-4 with a double and also drove in three runs.
Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover), Jordan, Davis and Lichter
all chipped in with two hits each.
Ian Lenda is stuck with the loss for the Captains. Lenda allowed
three earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
The Captains finished with just three hits, two off the bat of
Ben Lenda who had a single, a homerun and an RBI.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action Thursday, April
6th, when they host North Carolina Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
