LEXINGTON, VA—Randolph-Macon Baseball starting pitcher
Kyle Hicks tossed a complete game shutout in game two on the way to
a 10-0 win and a doubleheader split with Washington and Lee.
W&L took game one 8-4, moving their record to 11-13 overall and
7-7 in the ODAC while with the game two win, R-MC improves to 11-12
overall and 8-4 in the ODAC.
A Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee Davis) RBI single in
the top of the first gave Randolph-Macon an early 1-0 in game one.
The Jackets extended that lead to 4-0 with a three run second
inning, highlighted by a two run single off the bat of Kevin Davis
(Hanover, VA/ Hanover).
An RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the third put the
Generals on the board and closed the R-MC lead to 4-1.
Washington and Lee then rallied for six runs on four hits and
one Yellow Jacket error to push ahead 7-4.
Randolph-Macon threatened to score in both the fifth and seventh
innings but could not push across a run.
C.J. Thompson doubled home a run in the bottom of the sixth for
W&L to extend their lead to 8-4 which would prove to be the
final.
Michael Helbig (Midlothian, VA/ Midlothian) is stuck with the
loss after allowing one earned run in three and two thirds innings
of work. Justin Thorn (Mechanicsville, VA/ Hanover) gave up just
one earned run in two and a third innings of work.
Davis led the Jackets at the plate with a 3-for-4 game while
also driving in two runs.
Chuck Davidson picks up the win for Washington and Lee after
allowing four earned runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
Gregg Laswell is credited with the save while also striking out
two.
The Yellow Jackets were locked in a scoreless tie in game two
until leadoff singles from Davis and Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/
Hanover) in the fourth set up an RBI sacrifice fly from Walton
which scored Davis and gave R-MC a 1-0 lead.
Davis doubled home James Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca)
and Brian Jordan in the fifth (Columbia, VA/ Goochland) to extend
the Jackets lead to 3-0.
Randolph-Macon exploded for a seven run seventh inning,
highlighted by a three run homerun off the bat of Adam Carpenter
(Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin). Davis and Weymouth bookended the
inning with RBI singles and the Jackets' catcher Jay Lichter
(Richmond, VA/ Varina) drove in two runs with a single.
The 10-0 lead was more than enough run support for R-MC's
starting pitcher Hicks (Goochland, VA/ Goochland) who went the
distance for a complete game shutout. Hicks allowed just six hits
while striking out eight.
