SALEM, VA-- With one on and two outs in the top of the eighth,
R-MC's Megan Shepherd belted a two run homerun to send
Randolph-Macon Softball to a 5-3 victory over Virginia Wesleyan
College. The No. 6 seeded Yellow Jackets will now face No. 7 seed
Randolph College Friday, April 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
Virginia Wesleyan took an early 1-0 lead on a Brenae Pettit RBI
single in the first inning.
Laura Bauer (New Kent, VA/ New Kent) tied the game at one with a
solo homerun to left center in the top of the third.
Randolph-Macon took the lead in the top of the fourth after
Paige Smith (Harborton, VA/ Nandua) led off with a double and
scored later in the inning on a Marlins' error.
Smith tripled in the sixth and then scored on a Shepherd
(Southview, VA/ Park View) RBI single to stretch the R-MC lead to
3-1.
A Brianna Bertovich RBI single in the bottom half cut the
Jackets' lead to 3-2 heading into the final inning.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Kristy White singled
home Shannon Renigar to tie things up at 3-3 and send the game to
extra innings.
Shepherd stepped to the plate with one out in the top of the
eighth and ripped homerun to left center, putting the Jackets up
5-3.
Randolph-Macon starting pitcher Heather Lewis (Glen Allen, VA/
Deep Run) shutdown Virginia Wesleyan in the bottom half and R-MC
took game one of the ODAC tournament 5-3.
Shepherd paced the Jackets going 3-for-4 with a homerun and
three RBI. Lewis improves to 9-5 on the season after allowing just
three earned in eight innings in the circle.
No. 6 seed R-MC will now face No. 7 Randolph College Friday,
April 23rd at 7:30 p.m. Randolph upset No.2 seeded
Roanoke College 11-3 earlier today.
