SALEM, VA—Laura Bauer and Paige Smith both hit grand slams
as Randolph-Macon Softball scored 13 unanswered runs to defeat
Randolph College 13-5 on day one of the ODAC Softball Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets will now face Eastern Mennonite Saturday, April
24th at 2:00 p.m. in a matchup of tournament
unbeatens.
Lindsay Cross put the WildCats on the board in the top of the
first with a three run homerun to right center.
Randolph went up 5-0 in the top of the second when Brittany
Willingham drove in two runs with a double to left center.
The Yellow Jackets drew three bases loaded walks to cut the
WildCats' lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the second. Bauer (New
Kent, VA/ New Kent) then stepped to the plate and ripped a grand
slam to left, putting Randolph-Macon in front 7-5.
Three consecutive singles for R-MC in the fourth loaded the
bases for Smith (Harborton, VA/ Nandua) who then belted a grand
slam to left center, giving Randolph-Macon an 11-5 advantage.
Bauer's solo homerun in the top of the fifth put the
Yellow Jackets up 12-5. Lauryn Nanny capped the Randolph-Macon
offense in the sixth with a double down the left field line,
scoring Lindsey Tingler (Doswell, VA/ Patrick Henry) and giving
R-MC the 13-5 victory.
Kristen Dize (Onancock, VA/ Nandua) picks up the win for the
Yellow Jackets after allowing no earned runs in four and a third
innings of work. Bauer paced Randolph-Macon going 3-for-3 with two
homeruns and five RBI. Smith finished 3-for-4 with a homerun and
four RBI.
In other ODAC Softball Tournament action; No. 1 seed Guilford
College was eliminated after losing to Eastern Mennonite 7-2 and
Bridgewater College 7-6. No.2 seed Roanoke College exited the
tournament after losing to Randolph College 11-3 and Virginia
Wesleyan 5-2.
No.6 seed Randolph-Macon will now face No.8 seed Eastern
Mennonite Saturday, April 24th at 2:00 p.m. on
field one at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA.
