HARRISONBURG, VA— Junior Paige Smith had two homeruns and
five RBI as Randolph-Macon Softball finished the 2010 regular
season with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite 7-1 and 15-8
in Harrisonburg on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets finish with their
highest conference win total in program history at 11-7.
Michalann Camp (Courtland, VA/ South Hampton Academy) put R-MC
on the board in the first inning of game one with an RBI single to
left. Smith (Harborton, VA/ Nandua) drove in a run later in the
inning when she reached on a fielder's choice.
Randolph-Macon extended the lead to 3-0 when Heather Lewis (Glen
Allen, VA/ Deep Run) stole home in the second after leading off the
inning with a single. Laura Bauer (New Kent, VA/ New Kent) pushed
it to 4-0 with a run scoring sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Jessica Sullivan's double to right center in the bottom of
the fourth scored Lisa Lee and put the Royals on the board.
With one on and no outs in the top of the fifth, Smith belted a
homerun to right center to put the Yellow Jackets up 6-1. R-MC
tacked on one more run in the sixth to take game one by a final of
7-1.
Lewis allowed just one run and struck out six in seven innings
of work to improve to 8-5 on the season. Smith paced the Jackets at
the plate with a homerun and three RBI. Megan Shepherd (Southview,
VA/ Park View) and Camp both finished with two hits each.
Nicole Wade picks up the loss after allowing six earned runs in
all seven innings in the circle. Jessica Blosser led the Royals
offensively with a 3-for-4 game.
Camp sparked the R-MC offense in the first inning of game two as
well with a two run single to right center.
Eastern Mennonite responded with two runs in the bottom half to
tie the game at 2-2.
Wade put EMU ahead in bottom of the second with a run scoring
triple and then scored later in the inning on a Jackets'
error to put the Royal's up 4-2.
After a Camp sacrifice fly pulled Randolph-Macon within one,
Shepherd ripped an RBI single to knot the score at 4-4.
Courtney Allman highlighted a four run third for EMU with a
three run homerun to put the Royals up 8-4.
The Yellow Jackets pushed across two runs in the top of the
fourth to cut the lead to 8-6 before Shepherd knocked a bases
loaded double to give Randolph-Macon a 9-8 advantage.
R-MC extended the lead to 10-8 after Morgan Greene (Virginia
Beach, VA/ Tallwood) scored on a Royals' error. Alex Gregoire
(Virginia Beach, VA/ First Colonial) and Lauryn Nanny (Chester, VA/
Thomas Dale) both drove in a run with singles in the sixth.
Gregoire would score later in the inning on another EMU error.
Eastern Mennonite finished with six errors in the game and ten for
the doubleheader.
Smith hit a two run homerun in the top of the seventh to put the
game out of reach at 15-8 which would hold to be the final.
Kristen Dize (Onancock, VA/ Nandua) picks up her second win of
the season after allowing just one earned run in two and a third
innings of work. Shepherd paced R-MC at the plate with a double and
four RBI. Greene finished with three hits while Nanny and Camp both
had multi-hit games.
Misty Judd is stuck with the loss after allowing five earned
runs in three and two thirds innings. Nicole Shelton finished
3-for-4 with an RBI to pace EMU at the plate.
The Yellow Jackets finish the 2010 season 15-11 overall and a
program best 11-7 in the ODAC. Seeding is still yet to be
determined for the ODAC tournament which begins Friday, April
23rd at the Moyer Complex in Salem, VA.
