SWEET BRIAR, VA—Laura Bauer's grand slam in game two
propelled Randolph-Macon Softball to a doubleheader sweep of Sweet
Briar College 3-0 and 13-6 in Lynchburg Wednesday. With the wins,
R-MC improves 9-5 in the ODAC which is their highest conference win
total in program history.
R-MC took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning of game one after
Morgan Greene (Virginia Beach, VA/ Tallwood) led off with a single
and then scored when Kelly Beard (Williamsport, MD/ Williamsport)
reached on a fielder's choice.
Paige Smith (Harborton, VA/ Nandua) extended the Jackets' lead
to 2-0 with a solo homerun to lead off the fourth inning. R-MC
tacked on one more in the top of the seventh to go up 3-0
The 3-0 advantage would be more than enough for Randolph-Macon
starting pitcher Beard who allowed no runs and just three hits
while striking out five for the complete game shutout win.
Greene paced the Jackets at the plate going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Smith had a homerun and two RBI.
Katelyn Jones is stuck with the loss for Sweet Briar after
allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings. Jordan Pugh
finished 2-for-3 to lead the Vixens offensively.
The Vixens went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game
two after Amey Landreth started the inning with a solo homerun. An
RBI single off the bat of Alexia Richards pushed across another run
for the early 2-0 advantage.
Megan Shepherd (Southview, VA/ Park View) responded for the
Jackets in the second with a two run double that scored Michalann
Camp (Courtland, VA/ South Hampton Academy) and Smith.
Landreth gave Sweet Briar the lead again with an RBI single in
the bottom of the second but Randolph-Macon answered with back to
back RBI doubles from Smith and Shepherd in the next inning to go
up 4-3.
The Vixens knotted the score again in the bottom of the third on
a solo homerun run from Jones.
The Yellow Jackets started the fourth with three straight hits
to load the bases for Laura Bauer (New Kent, VA/ New Kent) who then
broke the game open with a grand slam. Smith stepped to the plate
two batters later and hit her second solo homerun of the
doubleheader to cap the five run inning which put R-MC up 9-4.
Sweet Briar pulled within three runs after rallying for
two in the bottom of the fifth but that would be as close as they
would come as Randolph-Macon tacked on four in the seventh to pick
up the 13-6 victory.
Heather Lewis (Glen Allen, VA/ Deep Run) earns her seventh win
of the season after allowing five earned runs and striking out five
in four innings of work. Kristen Dize (Onancock, VA/ Nandua)
pitched three hitless innings of relief.
Bauer went 4-for-5 in the game with a homerun, a double and five
RBI. Shepherd and Smith both finished 4-for-4 at the plate;
Shepherd had three doubles and three RBI, Smith totaled a homerun,
two doubles and two RBI. As a team, Randolph-Macon finished with a
season high 18 hits.
Anna Newberg is stuck with the loss after allowing 11 earned
runs in six and third innings of work.
Landreth went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two runs batted in.
With their 13-6 win of game two against the Vixens, the
Yellow Jackets pick up their ninth conference victory of the
season which is their highest conference win total in program
history. R-MC still has four ODAC games remaining in the regular
season.
Randolph-Macon Softball will be back in action Saturday, April
17th when they travel to Bridgewater College for a 2:00
