Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA—Randolph-Macon Softball rallied for four runs
in the sixth inning of game two to complete the doubleheader sweep
of Guilford College 4-3 and 8-7 in Ashland Sunday. The Yellow
Jackets improve to 11-9 overall and 7-5 in the ODAC while the
Quakers fall to 24-9-1 overall, 9-3 in the ODAC.
Julie Langseth put Guilford on the board in the first inning of
game one with an RBI single up the middle.
The Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom half when Michalann
Camp (Courtland, VA/ South Hampton Academy) single home Morgan Greene (Virginia Beach, VA/ Tallwood).
Autumn Yoder hit a run scoring triple down the right field line
in the second inning to put the Quakers back on top 2-1.
Randolph-Macon tied the game at 2-2 when Lauryn Nanny (Chester,
VA/ Thomas Dale) drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning.
Laura Bauer (New Kent, VA/ New Kent) stepped to the plate next and
reached on a fielder's choice which scored Kristen Dize
(Onancock, VA/ Nandua) to put the Jackets up 3-2.
The Quakers tied things up again in the top of the fifth on an
Ami Hutcherson run scoring single. R-MC denied GC from taking the
lead by getting a bases loaded groundout to end the inning.
Bauer hit a one out double in the bottom of the fifth to put the
go ahead run in scoring position. Katie McCauley (Chesterfield, VA/
Manchester) came on to pinch run for Bauer and scored on a Camp
single to put the Jackets up 4-3.
With the bases loaded and no outs for Guilford in the top of the
sixth, freshman lefty Heather Lewis (Glen Allen, VA/ Deep Run) came
on to pitch for Randolph-Macon. Lewis then struck out two and
fielded a comebacker to keep the Jackets' 4-3 lead intact for
the remainder of the game.
Dize gave up just two earned runs in five innings to pick up her
first win of the season for R-MC. Lewis struck out three in two
innings of relief for the save.
Camp and Bauer both finished 2-for-3 to pace the Jackets at the
plate.
Shelby Bowser suffers her second loss of the season after
allowing one earned run in four and two thirds innings of work.
Guilford took advantage of three hits and two Randolph-Macon
errors to score three runs in the first inning of game two.
Bauer belted a solo homerun in the bottom half to cut the Quaker
lead to 3-1.
With GC leading 4-1 in the bottom of the third, R-MC junior
Paige Smith ripped a bases loaded single through the right side,
plating two runs and pulling the Jackets within one run.
Randolph-Macon tied the game at four in the fourth inning on two
Guilford errors.
Hutcherson put the Quakers back on top in the fifth with a
sacrifice bunt that scored the pinch runner Sarah Pedroncelli.
The Yellow Jackets then rallied for four runs on five hits in
the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 advantage. Camp and Smith
led off the inning with singles. Camp then scored on a throwing
error by the Guilford catcher. Megan Shepherd (Southview, VA/
Park View) stepped to the plate next doubled down the right field
line to score Smith. Alex Gregoire (Virginia Beach, VA/ First
Colonial) singled home another run before Nanny capped the four run
rally with an RBI double.
Charissa Duncan pulled the Quakers within one in the bottom of
the seventh when she plated two runs with a double. R-MC pitcher
Lewis then settled in to get the final two outs and finish off the
doubleheader sweep.
Lewis improves to 6-4 on the season after allowing four earned
runs and striking out five in seven innings of work.
Bauer, Gregoire, Shepherd and Smith all finished with two hits
for the Jackets who totaled 11 as a team.
Emily Willis is stuck with the loss for Guilford after giving up
five earned runs in five innings of work.
Hutcherson went 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the Quakers at the
plate.
Randolph-Macon Softball travels to Sweet Briar College
Wednesday, April 14th for a 3:30 p.m. ODAC
doubleheader.
