FAYETTEVILLE, NC-R-MC Baseball took a 3-2 lead into the bottom
of the seventh before Methodist rallied for three runs to down the
Yellow Jackets 5-3 in Fayetteville Thursday. Randolph-Macon falls
to 4-3 while Methodist improves to 9-4.
Freshman leftfielder Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover) led
off the top of the first with a double down the right field line
and scored later in the inning on a passed ball to put the Yellow
Jackets up 1-0.
The Monarchs answered in the bottom half with a leadoff single
from Tripp Lancaster, who later scored on an RBI groundout by Trey
Such to tie the game at 1-1.
Jay Lichter led off the fifth with a double to left to put R-MC
in scoring position. Weymouth followed one batter later and singled
to right, scoring Lichter to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead.
Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/ Goochland) singled home James
Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) in the sixth, stretching the
Randolph-Macon advantage to 3-1.
Methodist pulled within one after Shawn Lovette hit a solo
homerun to left in the sixth.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out for MU in
the seventh. After a balk brought home one run, Lancaster singled
through the left side of the infield to plate two runs and put the
Monarchs up 5-3. Methodist would pitch a scoreless ninth to hold on
for the 5-3 victory.
Weymouth led the Yellow Jackets with two hits including a double
and an RBI. Lichter also had two hits with a double; Adam Carpenter
(Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) finished with two singles.
R-MC starting pitcher Matt Tiller (Midlothian, VA/ Clover Hill)
gave up three earned runs in six and a third innings; Bierlein
pitched a scoreless eighth.
Lancaster paced the Monarchs offense with two hits and two RBI.
Lovette also had two hits with a homerun and an RBI.
Randolph-Macon travels to Roanoke College Saturday, March
6th, to take on the Maroons for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader
at Lewis-Gale Field in Salem, VA.
