ASHLAND, VA-- Cory Jackson's grand slam highlighted a nine run,
two out rally in the second inning for the Yellow Jackets on the
way to a 24-10 win over Virginia Wesleyan in Ashland Tuesday. R-MC
Baseball is now 5-3 in the ODAC, 7-9 overall.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, freshman Michael
Helbig (Midlothian, VA/ Midlothian) singled through the left side,
sparking a nine run, two out rally for Randolph-Macon. James
Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) followed Helbig with a double
to put runners at second and third, setting up Brian Jordan
(Columbia, VA/ Goochland) to hit a two run single.
Kevin Davis (Hanover, VA/ Hanover) extended rally with a two run
single to center and scored later in the inning on an error. After
the Jackets reloaded the bases, Jackson (Beaverdam, VA/ PH-Ashland)
stepped up and smashed a grand slam to left center, giving R-MC a
9-0 advantage.
A Mike Marion RBI double in the top of the third inning put the
Marlins on the board.
Randolph-Macon rallied for another big inning in the third,
scoring five runs on five hits. Davis' sacrifice fly scored the
first run. Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover) and Jordan Walton
(Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee-Davis) followed with RBI singles before
Jackson drove in two more runs with a single up the middle to put
the Jackets up 14-1.
VWC pushed across four runs on five hits to pull within nine
runs but, that would be as close as the Marlins would get as
Randolph-Macon scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth and five
in the eighth on the way to a 24-10 win.
Jackson paced R-MC at the plate with three hits including a
homerun and seven RBI. Seven Yellow Jackets had multi hit games;
Weymouth had four hits with two doubles and two RBI. Davis and
Jordan drove in three runs each.
Matt Tiller (Midlothian, VA/ Clover Hill) picked up his first
win of the season, striking out five in six innings of work. Justin
Thorn (Mechanicsville, VA/ Hanover) allowed just one run in two
innings of relief.
Jesse Baker is stuck with loss after giving up seven earned runs
in two innings of work.
Randolph-Macon travels to St. Mary's (Md.) College Thursday,
March 25th, for a 3:30 game.
