HARRISONBURG, VA—Jordan Walton's two run double in
the eighth inning of game one highlighted a four run inning to send
Randolph-Macon Baseball past Bridgewater 9-5 in Harrisonburg
Saturday. The Eagles took game two 9-4 to avoid the sweep.
Down 2-0 in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets used RBI singles from
Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover), Kevin Davis (Hanover, VA/
Hanover), and Walton (Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee-Davis) to take a 4-2
advantage.
Bridgewater pushed across one run on a sacrifice fly in the
sixth to pull within in one run at 4-3.
Weymouth extended the R-MC lead back to two runs with a solo
homerun to right field in the top of the seventh.
RBI singles from Jonathan Mason and Alex Nuttycombe in the
bottom of the seventh tied the game at 5-5, sending the seven
inning contest into extra innings.
Ryan Hughes (Crozet, VA/ Western Albemarle) singled home a run
in the top of the eighth to spark a four run inning; two of those
runs came off the bat of Walton who doubled to score Hughes and Jay
Lichter (Richmond, VA/ Varina).
James Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) pitched a scoreless
bottom of the eighth for the Yellow Jackets to hold on for the 9-5
win.
Bierlein picks up the win after allowing just two runs in two
innings of work. Michael Helbig (Midlothian, VA/ Midlothian)
started for R-MC and gave up two runs in five innings of work.
Weymouth paced the Jackets with two hits including a homerun and
two RBI. Walton also had two hits and three RBI.
Drew Elkins is tagged with the Eagles' loss after allowing
six earned runs in seven and a third innings of work.
R-MC's Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/ Goochland) homered to
right field in the third inning of game two to tie the game at 1-1.
Mason put the Eagles back on top with an RBI single in the
bottom of the fourth.
After Hughes scored on a Bridgewater error in the top of the
fifth, Davis singled home Lichter to give Randolph-Macon a 3-2
advantage.
BC rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the fifth,
highlighted by a two run Mason double to left center, to take a 7-3
lead.
The Eagles would hold on to their lead for the remainder of the
game and win by a final of 9-4.
R-MC starter Byron Mendenhall (Falls Church, VA/ George Mason)
is tagged with the loss after giving up six runs in four and a
third innings while striking out eight.
Jordan paced the Yellow Jackets at the plate in game two with
three hits including a homerun and an RBI.
Alex Foltz picked up the win for Bridgewater, going six innings
and allowing three earned runs.
Mitchell Edwards and Mason led the Eagles at the plate with two
hits and three RBI each.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action Tuesday, March 23th, when
they host Virginia Wesleyan for a 3:00 p.m. game.
