ASHLAND, VA-Freshman Michael Helbig picks up his first career
win as Randolph-Macon Baseball downs York College 9-3 in Ashland
Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-2 overall while
the Spartans fall to 2-3.
Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover) and Kevin Davis (Hanover,
VA/ Hanover) led off the bottom of the first with singles. Weymouth
scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice to give R-MC a 1-0
lead.
York College pushed across a run in the top of the second with a
couple of singles and an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
Right Fielder James Bierlein (Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) put the
Yellow Jackets back on top in the bottom half of the second with a
solo homerun to left.
The Randolph-Macon bats came to life again in the bottom of the
fifth to score four runs on five hits. Adam Carpenter led off with
a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from catcher
Jay Lichter (Richmond, VA/ Varina). Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/
Goochland) came up next and hit a single up the middle, scoring
Carpenter from second. After a Weymouth double put runners at
second and third, Davis hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Jordan.
An RBI single from Greg Mitro (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) and an
RBI double from Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville, VA Lee-Davis)
stretched the R-MC led to 6-1.
York rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh on a
sacrifice fly from Kyle Cook and an RBI double from CT Stanley.
With a runner on second and two out, R-MC reliever Haile Lytton
(Mechanicsville, VA/ Hanover) came on and shutdown the rally with a
strikeout.
Randolph-Macon plated two runs in the eighth on RBI singles from
Davis and Walton then pushed across one more in the ninth on a
passed ball to take the 9-3 victory.
Five Yellow Jackets had multi hit games including Davis who
finished two for three with two RBI. Jordan, Walton and Weymouth
all had doubles; Walton also drove in two runs.
Helbig (Midlothian, VA/ Midlothian) earned his first career win
as a Yellow Jacket, pitching five innings and allowing just one run
on two hits while striking out four.
Stanley paced York with a double and an RBI. KC Beshore picks up
the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits and striking out four.
Randolph-Macon will travel to Methodist College Thursday, March
4th, for a 6:00 p.m. game.
