ASHLAND, VA—R-MC second baseman Kevin Davis went 3-for-5
with a double and an RBI but F&M scored four in the fourth and
two in the fifth to get past the Yellow Jackets 6-5 in Ashland
Tuesday.
Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover) led off the bottom of the
first with a single for Randolph-Macon and then scored on an RBI
double by Davis (Hanover, VA/ Hanover). Jackets' first
baseman Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee-Davis) followed two
batters later with a double, scoring Davis and putting R-MC up 2-0.
Walton scored Davis again in the third, this time on a RBI
single to center, giving Randolph-Macon a 3-0 lead.
Franklin and Marshall rallied to take the lead with a four run
fourth inning, highlighted by a two run triple from Eric Bornstein.
Adam Carpenter (Richmond, VA/ Mills Godwin) led off the fourth
with a single and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a
groundout. Jay Lichter (Richmond, VA/ Varina) scored Carpenter
later in the inning with a groundout to shortstop, tying the game
at 4-4.
A walk and a single gave the Diplomats runners on first and
second before an R-MC error pushed across two unearned runs in the
fifth inning.
Carpenter drew a two out walk for the Jackets in the bottom of
the fifth and then advanced to third on a single from Bryan Hannum
(Richmond, VA/ James River). Lichter then singled to left, scoring
Carpenter and pulling R-MC within one at 6-5. A walk to Brian
Jordan (Columbia, VA/ Goochland) loaded the bases but the Yellow
Jackets could not bring home a run to tie the game.
Defense and pitching held both teams scoreless for the remainder
of the game and the Diplomats held on for the 6-5 win.
Matt Tiller (Midlothian/ Clover Hill) is stuck with the loss
after giving up four earned runs on seven hits while striking out
four. Dale Langford (Dinwiddie, VA/ Richmond Christian), Byron
Mendenhall (Falls Church, VA/ George Mason), and James Bierlein
(Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) combined for four scoreless innings of
relief.
Jason Anderson allowed five runs on ten hits in the win for
Franklin and Marshall. Eric Herbst went three and a third innings
to pick up the save, allowing no runs and no hits.
Davis had three hits with a double and an RBI to lead
Randolph-Macon. Walton had two hits including a double and drove in
two runs. Lichter finished 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and was hit
by a pitch.
J.T. Triantos went 2-for-3 for the Diplomats with two walks.
Bornstein had a triple and drove in two runs.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday, March
17th, for a 3:00 p.m. game.
