ASHLAND, VA—The Yellow Jackets rallied from a 3-0 deficit
to send Wednesday's game in Ashland to extra innings before Averett
drove home a run in the top tenth and held on for the 4-3 win. R-MC
falls to 5-6 while AU improves to 13-6.
Averett's Michael Moore singled home a run in the top of the
first to start a three run inning for the Cougars. Moore scored
later in the inning on an RBI groundout and a Kyle Newcomb RBI
double put AU up 3-0 early.
Randolph-Macon starting pitcher Matt Tiller (Midlothian, VA/
Clover Hill) settled in after the first inning and did not allow
another run to score. Tiller gave up just two earned runs and seven
hits in six innings on the mound.
Cory Jackson (Beaverdam, VA/ PH-Ashland) drew a two out walk in
the bottom of the sixth for R-MC with the score still 3-0 in AU's
favor. Bryan Hannum (Richmond, VA/ James River) then followed with
a double to deep left field, scoring Jackson from first.
With two on and one out in the seventh, Kevin Davis (Hanover,
VA/ Hanover) singled home Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/ Goochland) to
pull the Jackets within one. Greg Mitro followed with an RBI
groundout to tie the game at 3-3 after seven innings.
R-MC had two runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings but
could not push across a run to break the 3-3 tie.
James Carter stepped to the plate with two on and two out in the
top of the tenth and singled through the left side of the infield,
scoring Newcomb from second. This would prove to be the winning run
as the Yellow Jackets could not bring in a run in the bottom half.
Hannum led R-MC at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Eric
Sibrizzi and Jimbo Newcomb both finished with three hits to pace
AU.
Freshman pitcher Justin Thorn (Mechanicsville, VA/ Hanover)
picks up the loss after giving up one run on three hits in two
innings of work.
Chase Hall earns the win for the Cougars, allowing no runs on
five hits in two and two thirds innings. Brian Knowles picked up
his second save of the season after pitching a scoreless tenth with
two strikeouts.
Randolph-Macon returns to action Saturday, March 13th, when they
host Lynchburg College for a noon doubleheader.
